After graduation from the Technical University of Berlin (TUB, Berlin, Germany) in 2008 with a Diploma degree in computer science (Dipl.-Inf.), Tung joined the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) where he had been working since 2004 as a student member.
He is with the Video Coding Technologies group of the Video Coding and Analytics Department. His main research topic is the efficient compression of image and video that also involves active participation in standardization activities such as the development of the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) and Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standards.
In the course of the work as a member of the Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC) for the HEVC development and of the Joint Video Experts Team (JVET) for the VVC development, he successfully contributed to the HEVC and the VVC standard.
